Savory Carrot Rolls Recipe
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- ¼ cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 egg
For the filling:
- 3 large carrots, grated
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon oil or butter
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- ½ teaspoon chili powder (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh cilantro (optional, finely chopped)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the dough
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Stir to combine.
- Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if necessary.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the carrot filling
- In a pan, heat oil or butter over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
- Add the grated carrots, turmeric, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the carrots are soft.
- Add cilantro if using, then set aside the filling to cool.
Step 3: Assemble the rolls
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 12x18 inches).
- Spread the carrot filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Roll the dough tightly, starting from one of the long sides, like a jelly roll.
- Cut the rolled dough into 1-inch pieces and place them on the prepared baking tray, cut side up.
- Cover and let them rise for 15-20 minutes.
Step 4: Bake
- Brush the tops of the rolls with a little milk or melted butter.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown.
- Let them cool slightly before serving.
Enjoy your delicious savory carrot rolls!
